Grammatical Gender in Welsh

Welsh, just like languages such as French or Spanish, has two grammatical genders; gwrywaidd (masculine) and benywaidd (feminine).

Unfortunately, there is no quick shortcut or trick to learn the gender of Welsh nouns and it is always best to learn a noun’s gender either with the article (as feminine nouns will get a soft mutation after the article) or with an adjective such as da (as feminine nouns will cause a soft mutation to the following adjective.

  • y + ffenestr = y fenestr

  • ffenestr + da = fenestr dda
